This is an extraordinary book. The author is unique in the world of psychoanalytic psychotherapy; he strides the landscape of psychoanalytic theory and of philosophy with equal felicity, as though they are, for him, kindred, intimate domains. That he is capable of achieving interdisciplinary thinking in these disciplines of such a high order is, as the title of the book suggests, a reflection of Rhode’s capacity for imaginative contemplation and, through this, the establishment of a mosaic of progressively deepening links in multiple directions.
Paul Williams. Training and Supervising Analyst with the British Psychoanalytical Society, a Consultant Psychotherapist in the British National Health Service with the South & East Belfast Health Service Trust in Northern Ireland, a Professor at Queen’s University (Belfast) and at Anglia Ruskin University (Essex, England) and Joint Editor-in-Chief of the International Journal of Psychoanalysis.
He is a Magellan of the unconscious, sailing off to map a mysterious internal world, in part with the conviction and confidence that maps do represent what is “in there” and in part as the fearful narrator of a journey over the edge and beyond the horizon.
Gilead Nachmani, Ph.D. President. The William Alanson White Psychoanalytic Society
